Is Morphology an Obstacle to Word Mapping?

The phoneme sequence shown is suitable for both British and Australian English

When teachers’ beliefs about how words should be analysed conflict with education department expectations
 

Teachers bring different knowledge, training and theoretical perspectives to the teaching of reading and spelling. These perspectives can enrich professional knowledge, particularly when teachers explore phonology, morphology, etymology and the wider orthographic system.

However, personal beliefs about how English orthography should be analysed do not alter the knowledge and skills specified within curriculum and education department guidance.


This distinction becomes particularly important when teachers are asked to map the phonemes and graphemes in a word.

Education departments are explicit about the importance of phonemic awareness, phonics and orthographic mapping. Yet asking teachers to actually map the phonemes and graphemes in a word can reveal very different understandings of what that means.

In some cases, rather than recognising a gap between their mapping and departmental expectations, teachers may challenge the premise of the task itself.


A REAL EXAMPLE: OBSTACLE


During a recent professional discussion with primary teachers in Queensland, the following question was posed:


“Morphology aside for a minute, can you map the phonemes and graphemes for the word ‘obstacle’? (That’s the focus of the department.)”

The request to put morphology aside temporarily was deliberate.


It did not suggest that morphology was unimportant, nor was the question asking for the etymology or morphological structure of obstacle.

It was asking for the demonstration of something very specific:


Identify the phonemes and identify the graphemes that represent them.


This is an expectation across Australian education systems. State and territory curricula and departmental guidance require students to develop and apply knowledge of phoneme–grapheme correspondences for reading and spelling. These expectations extend beyond simple one-syllable phonics words to increasingly complex and multisyllabic words.


Morphological knowledge is also expected, but it does not remove the requirement to understand the phonological–orthographic relationships within words.


WHEN BELIEFS CONFLICT WITH THE STATED EXPECTATION


The response to the question about obstacle included:

“not all graphemes represent a phoneme, so why would you rely on that as a strategy?”


The teacher also questioned why mapping phonemes and graphemes would be relevant to a word such as obstacle and later stated:

“The mapping does not have to be solely phonology based.”


When asked to provide the graphemic structure of obstacle, the following analysis was given:

The final <e> was described as:

“The final silent <e> is a grapheme whose function is other than to signal its own phoneme.”


This interaction illustrates an important teacher-knowledge issue.


The issue is not whether the teacher has knowledge about English orthography, morphology or etymology.

The issue is whether their understanding of a grapheme, and the resulting mapping, aligns with what the education department expects teachers to understand and support children to do.

If teachers disagree with those expectations, that disagreement should be directed towards the curriculum or education authority responsible for them. It does not change what teachers are currently expected to know and implement.


WHAT DOES THE QUEENSLAND DEPARTMENT ACTUALLY SAY?


The Queensland Department of Education’s Reading Position Statement is explicit:

“Word reading involves the use of phonemic awareness and phonic knowledge to decode written words.”

It then states:

“In Standard Australian English (SAE) this requires students to map 44 speech sounds (phonemes) to 26 letter or letter combinations (graphemes).”

Students:

“blend sounds to read words, and segment words into sounds to spell.”


The Department also states that systematic synthetic phonics provides a foundation for word reading and writing by teaching the grapheme–phoneme correspondences of Standard Australian English in a planned, cumulative sequence.


The expectation is therefore specific: speech sounds are mapped to the letters or letter combinations that represent them.

This is not dependent on whether an individual teacher considers a different linguistic framework to provide a better account of English orthography.


RETURNING TO OBSTACLE


Using the reference pronunciation in this example:

Phonemes:
ɒ b s t ə k ə l

Graphemes:
<o> <b> <s> <t> <a> <c> <le>


The purpose of asking a teacher to map the word in this way is not to establish whether they agree with this way of conceptualising English orthography.

It is to establish whether they can demonstrate the phonological–orthographic knowledge required by the framework within which they are teaching.

That is a very different question.


“THAT DOES NOT ALIGN WITH THE WAY ORTHOGRAPHY WORKS”


The teacher subsequently stated:

“The mapping does not have to be solely phonology based. I understand that your approach may be, but that does not align with the way orthography works.”


This exposes the central issue.


The question had been about something specified by the education department. It was subsequently reframed as a difference in methodology or theoretical belief.


But these are separate issues.


A teacher may believe that another linguistic framework provides a more complete explanation of English orthography. That position can be discussed, researched and challenged.


It does not change the Department’s stated expectation that students map speech sounds (phonemes) to letters or letter combinations (graphemes).

This is not about personal beliefs around methodology.


If teachers, researchers or linguists disagree with an education department’s expectations, they can challenge those expectations.

But first, we need to establish whether teachers understand what those expectations actually are.


MORPHOLOGY IS NOT THE PROBLEM


Morphology itself is not an obstacle to word mapping.


High-quality literacy instruction should develop knowledge of morphology, etymology and the wider orthographic system alongside secure phonological–orthographic knowledge.


The potential obstacle is teacher belief.


A teacher with extensive morphological knowledge may believe that phonological analysis provides an inadequate account of English orthography.


That is a legitimate theoretical discussion.


But if that belief leads them to respond to a request to identify the phonemes and graphemes in a word with:

“not all graphemes represent a phoneme”

then an important discrepancy has been identified.


Their conceptual framework may not align with the framework their education department expects them to implement.

That discrepancy matters.


THIS IS A TEACHER-KNOWLEDGE ISSUE


Teacher knowledge cannot be established simply by asking:


Do you understand phonics?

Do you understand orthographic mapping?

Do you understand morphology?

Knowledge needs to be demonstrated.

Can a teacher identify the phonemes in the pronunciation being mapped?

Can they identify the letters or letter combinations functioning as graphemes?

Can they identify their phoneme values?

Can they map those relationships accurately in words beyond those explicitly taught within a phonics programme?


These questions become particularly important with multisyllabic, complex and unfamiliar words.


Within a phonics lesson, the programme may have already selected the words, identified the target correspondences and determined how those words will be presented.


Outside that lesson, children encounter words containing correspondences that have not yet been explicitly taught.

Teachers need sufficient knowledge of the alphabetic code to support those encounters.


TEACHERS NEED CLEARER GUIDANCE


Governments and education departments cannot establish phoneme–grapheme mapping expectations and then assume that all teachers interpret terms such as phoneme, grapheme, correspondence, word mapping and orthographic mapping in the same way.

They clearly do not.

Clearer guidance is needed, particularly for mapping words containing correspondences beyond those explicitly taught within phonics programmes.

This guidance should sit alongside high-quality resources for morphology, etymology and the wider orthographic system.

The aim is not to restrict teachers to one layer of word analysis.

It is to ensure that teachers can distinguish between those layers and demonstrate the specific knowledge their education system expects.


BELIEF CANNOT SUBSTITUTE FOR THE STATED EXPECTATION


Teachers should question policy. Researchers should scrutinise it. Linguists should contribute to its development.

Departmental frameworks should change when evidence demonstrates that change is needed.

But evaluating the framework is a different task from evaluating whether teachers currently understand and can implement it.

A teacher’s mapping either aligns with the stated framework or it does not.

Personal beliefs about how English orthography should ideally be conceptualised cannot substitute for the knowledge and skills currently specified by curriculum and education authorities.

This distinction is central to meaningful teacher assessment, effective professional learning and clearer guidance around the alphabetic code.

It is also why a free resource bank is needed, bringing together authoritative guidance for bidirectional word mapping, morphology, etymology and the wider orthographic system, while clearly identifying the knowledge and skills education departments currently expect teachers to demonstrate.

The goal is not less knowledge about words. It is greater knowledge, with clarity about what teachers are expected to know and do.

Across Australian state and territory education systems, students are expected to develop and apply knowledge of phoneme–grapheme correspondences for reading and spelling. These expectations extend beyond simple one-syllable phonics words to increasingly complex and multisyllabic words. Morphological knowledge is also expected, but it does not replace the requirement to understand the phonological–orthographic relationships within words.
 

The evidence is strong across all eight jurisdictions:


QUEENSLAND

The Department explicitly states that word reading requires students to “map 44 speech sounds (phonemes) to 26 letter or letter combinations (graphemes)”, then blend sounds to read and segment words into sounds to spell.

NEW SOUTH WALES

NSW defines a grapheme as “the smallest unit of writing used to represent one phoneme”, and the syllabus requires students to use grapheme–phoneme correspondences to decode and encode words. Department guidance also describes blending and segmenting as reciprocal processes.

VICTORIA

Victoria describes English as consisting of speech sounds that “map onto letter patterns (graphemes)” and states that students need to automatically map graphemes to corresponding phonemes for reading and phonemes to graphemes for writing. Morphology and etymology are addressed separately.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The Western Australian curriculum requires students to use “phoneme–grapheme (sound–letter) relationships” to read and write words of one or more syllables and subsequently apply this knowledge to multisyllabic words containing more complex letter patterns.

South Australia's Department for Education literacy materials explicitly teach graphemes as representations of phonemes. Its teaching materials address grapheme–phoneme correspondences alongside morphology, including prefixes, suffixes and roots.

ACT public schools implement the Australian Curriculum. Australian Curriculum English includes explicit phonics and word-knowledge expectations involving phoneme–grapheme relationships, while ACT literacy policy supports systematic and explicit phonics instruction.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

The Northern Territory uses the Australian Curriculum as its F–10 curriculum framework. The Department's reading approach includes systematic, sequenced and explicit instruction, with the Australian Curriculum providing the corresponding phoneme–grapheme expectations.

NATIONAL EXPECTATION

The Australian National Literacy Learning Progression provides particularly clear evidence that grapheme–phoneme knowledge continues beyond simple phonics words.

At PKW8, students apply their knowledge to “multisyllabic words, including those with prefixes and suffixes”.

At PKW9, students “use grapheme-phoneme knowledge and blending skills” when reading “multisyllabic, complex and unfamiliar words quickly and accurately”.

This is particularly relevant to words such as obstacle. The presence of morphological structure does not remove the expectation to understand the phoneme–grapheme relationships within the word. Australian curriculum frameworks expect students to develop both phonological–orthographic and morphological knowledge.

 

England (UK)

The statutory National Curriculum states that “the letter(s) on the page represent the sounds in spoken words” and that this should underpin pupils’ “reading and spelling of all words.” The DfE Reading Framework defines a grapheme as “a letter, or combination of letters, that corresponds to a single phoneme within a word.”
